Help kids find reading fun
Reading is an adventure that everyone should enjoy. If you have young children, teach them to love reading. Show them a good example by reading yourself. Do it often, do it in front of them. Help them with books they may want to read, take them to the library and let them pick out books.
My son is 6 and learning how to read. He’s a visual learner and already knew a lot of words when he started school, but since the schools are stuck in this phonics and auditory learning mode he’s convinced again that he can’t read. I find it frustrating that I can’t get the school to change their methods, but what I can do is help him find his confidence again at home.
He gets library books every week, I pick some and he picks some. We read at bed time, in the afternoon, after school, and whenever else he wants. Reading is every child’s key to the future. They can do anything once they know how to read and the opportunities open wide. I hope to show him that reading is for fun. What he has to do in school is just school stuff. It’s not the real world and the real world is open to him if he wants it.
