Is Your Personal Computer a Zombie for a Botnet Spreading Cybercrime?

Botnets at present pose an enormous risk to Internet security. Bots are web robots which slip into computer systems and turn them into zombies, plus they each change other computer systems into zombies or an army of zombies that is headed up by a botmaster or hacker. The term zombie began in the west Indies, where it describes a robot-like individual who is considered to have been revived from the dead and must now do the desire of the living. In June of 2009 botnets sent about 83.2 % of spam. Gartner Group reports that a firm with 10,000 workers suffers more than $13 million worth of lost productiveness due to spam, or $50,000 everyday.

Nowadays these networks of compromised computer systems are manipulated by underground hijackers known as “bot-herders” – and they have become a significant problem in the net. Under the control of a hacker or group of cyber-terrorist, botnets are often used to execute assaults which range from spamming, click scams, and syndication of harmful software or malware, to fraud and identity theft, data assaults and refusal of service assaults online. Their objectives are data, identification or credit card robbery, and they can start a denial of service for any website for instance a bank, send out ransom notes or execute extortion.

The final objective of most Bot masters – the bad guys – is financial gain and from time to time simply malice. It’s turned into a structured crime network underground. What was previously amateur hackers are actually professionals who are extremely prepared, and for some it is even a full time career. They often retain the services of others, or even let their network of devices out to other cybercriminals.

Botnets can also broadcast malware alarms. That is when you see a note with the security proclaiming you have malware. You click on it, and it guides you to get a cleaner, which in turn in fact is a malware infection used to take your credit card numbers that can then be sold in volume along with other card information on the black market. They can copy and steal software, or worse, your security passwords, to allow them to log your keystrokes. Whenever you do a transaction on the internet, they can view what you’re doing.

Some experts have determined that the jeopardized device continues to be infected for six weeks on average, but Trend Micro did an examination last year and out of an estimated 100 million affected IP addresses, over fifty percent of those IP addresses have been recognized as being contaminated not less than three hundred days. That percentage goes up to 80 % if the minimum period is decreased to a month. See graph.
